History
The Sam Houston State University Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the primary representative voice of the student body in institutional decision-making processes, fostering meaningful student engagement within the shared governance framework of the university. Established in 1886, SGA is the first and oldest continuously active student organization at Sam Houston State University and will commemorate its 140th anniversary in 2026.
Operating through democratically elected student leaders, SGA has historically provided a formal mechanism for advocacy, leadership development, and collaboration between students and university administration. Originally modeled after the Texas State Senate, the organization’s early structure emphasized deliberation, representation, and civic responsibility, laying the foundation for student governance on campus.
In 1907, a complementary House of Representatives was introduced to expand student representation, and while inactive for several decades, it has recently garnered renewed interest for revival. Guided by its historic motto, Semper Progrediamur (“Let us always advance”), and its traditional colors of red, gold, and white, the Student Government Association continues to embody a legacy of student leadership, progress, and institutional partnership that remains central to the Sam Houston State University experience for current students, prospective students, and alumni alike.
